For recorder quintet ATTBG 1. And she expected a child 2. Where shall we go? 3. Fear not! 4. Singing him to sleep 5. The three Magi I have to admit: I love christmas. Although I am an atheist I always felt a deep connection to this feast: The couple looking for a home; the newborn child; the angel’s soothing words FEAR NOT; the wonderful surrealistic three magi with their presents. In my view...
For Recorder Trio ATB / TBB / AAT I wrote Suite grotèsque in 1996 for the Flutes ensemble, which premiered the piece in Hamburg on 25/5/1997. The first movement, Tokatokatta, is an impelling toccata for recorders, essentially 100 variations to the rhythm introduced in the first two bars, and which is thus not easy to forget. During the piece, the harmony changes from a cool, modal quartal harmony...

For Recorder Quintet ATTBK Score and five Parts I have always been a fan of variations because this form allows me as a composer to combine the strongest formal unity with the sharpest emotional contrasts. My first bigger composition were the 12 Variations on Von fremden Ländern und Menschen for piano solo (1988). 2014 I wrote the 16 Variations on an Irish Jig and 2015 the 12 Variations on an Old...

In 2013 Elisabeth Richers-Byrne from Dublin asked me to write a duet for her pupils Frankie and Ciara for Jugend Musiziert. I did so (it is duet No.9) - and immediately wanted to write more. I was bubbling over with ideas - and very quickly finished 20 pieces. I tried to produce a great variety: From easy to difficult, from fast to slow, from joyful to sad, from high flutes to low flutes. They...

For Recorder Orchestra SnSATTBGK Score and nine parts This is probably the easiest piece I ever wrote for Recorder Orchestra - because I wrote it in 2019 for the 5th Anniversary of the Itzehoer Recorder Day. For five years, 70 to 100 recorder amateurs have come together every year to play together. UXOLO in Xhosa means forgiveness. For me, forgiveness is one of the most important, comforting,...

Suite for two Guitars. In 1995 I was studying music at the Academy of Music in Hamburg and I fell in love with a fellow student named Angela. She played the guitar and had a guitar duo, so – what was a composer to do? – I wrote a suite for her guitar duo, LA JOIE (Joy). It was, as you can easily hear, inspired by my love for Ravel, Débussy, and Roussel, but the fundamental reason for this work...

Five Easy Pieces for Recorder Orchestra SAATTBBGK Score and nine Parts Since I started to give workshops on my African Recorder Music, I re-arranged some of my trios, quartets, and quintets for a bigger ensemble and simplified them thereby. This collection contains my five favorite arrangements of the last four years.   The Salutation in Djaboué is the opening movement of my very first African...
