Painful Memory

In 2024, I wrote the suite NIGHT SERENADE for the renowned Spanish recorder quartet WINDU, and especially for Eva Jornet, who won my 2021 video competition with her interpretation of THE SECRET OF SECRETS. I was so taken with the second movement, PAINFUL MEMORY, that I re-arranged it for flute and piano, and later for flute, cello, and piano. When I shared these recordings with my friend Eero Saunamäki, he suggested a version for recorder and piano, which he premiered beautifully in Tampere on 11 November 2025. In February 2026, we had the opportunity to record the piece together in Tampere – the recording is available on my YouTube channel:

Painful Memory is fully composed, yet it is meant to feel like free improvisation. I employ alto, tenor, and bass recorders to evoke a variety of “colours.” The performer’s task is to balance staying within the groove and rhythm while allowing the melodies to flow freely – and, most importantly, to play molto espressivo.
My heartfelt thanks go to Eero Saunamäki for the wonderful collaboration.
